Dear All,
We all know that Wikisource is one of the trending Wikimedia projects. We
are getting many new editors and new books to Indic language Wikisource's.
At the same time, we even noticed that there are many problems faced by the
new editors and a few of the existing editors. To help all of the editors
we have created a Handbook titled as *Wikisource Handbook for Indic
communities
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource_Handbook_for_Indian_Comm…>.
*Which is now available[1] to everyone to make the best use of it. I
request everyone to share this with all those who are in need of support in
editing Wikisource.
Authors of the book: Bodhisattwa Mandal and Ananth Subray P V.

Hello,
I've just written a short essay on Meta about issues I think the
Movement Strategy working groups ought to be thinking about.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:The_Land/Tensions_facing_movement_stra…
tl:dr: Firstly, '''accountability''' and '''equality''' are both
complicated concepts in the context we work in. And secondly, there is
inherently a tension between those two things and '''independence and
opportunity''', which is another key value we hold. That's not to say
there is a zero-sum choice to be made between these things, but there
may inevitably ''some'' choices to be made between them. I believe
that acknowledging the existence of these tensions is the best way to
achieve the best outcomes from the whole process.
Comments and criticism very welcome, I hope this is useful for people
on the Working Groups trying to grapple with these issues!
Chris
Hello everyone - apologies for cross-posting! *TL;DR*: We would like your
feedback on our Metrics Kit project. Please have a look and comment on
Meta-Wiki:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_health_initiative/Metrics_kit
The Wikimedia Foundation's Trust and Safety team, in collaboration with the
Community Health Initiative, is working on a Metrics Kit designed to
measure the relative "health"[1] of various communities that make up the
Wikimedia movement:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_health_initiative/Metrics_kit
The ultimate outcome will be a public suite of statistics and data looking
at various aspects of Wikimedia project communities. This could be used by
both community members to make decisions on their community direction and
Wikimedia Foundation staff to point anti-harassment tool development in the
right direction.
We have a set of metrics we are thinking about including in the kit,
ranging from the ratio of active users to active administrators,
administrator confidence levels, and off-wiki factors such as freedom to
participate. It's ambitious, and our methods of collecting such data will
vary.
Right now, we'd like to know:
* Which metrics make sense to collect? Which don't? What are we missing?
* Where would such a tool ideally be hosted? Where would you normally look
for statistics like these?
* We are aware of the overlap in scope between this and Wikistats <
https://stats.wikimedia.org/v2/#/all-projects> — how might these tools
coexist?
Your opinions will help to guide this project going forward. We'll be
reaching out at different stages of this project, so if you're interested
in direct messaging going forward, please feel free to indicate your
interest by signing up on the consultation page.
Looking forward to reading your thoughts.

[1] What do we mean by "health"? There is no standard definition of what
makes a Wikimedia community "healthy", but there are many indicators that
highlight where a wiki is doing well, and where it could improve. This
project aims to provide a variety of useful data points that will inform
community decisions that will benefit from objective data.

The Wikimania Steering Committee and Wikimedia Foundation are seeking
expressions of interest from interested parties for
hosting
Wikimani
a 2020.
Please see the following for more information:

If you are interested in discussing the possibilities and working with the
WMF Events Manager in preparing a proposal to host and organize Wikimania

, please contact eyoung at wikimedia.org
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimania-l> by October

know of an individual or group that we should approach about hosting, we
encourage nominations as well. The Steering Committee and WMF expect to
make a decision by early
2019.
Thanks, Ellie
Hi,
We are be testing our secondary data centre. This will make sure that the
wikis can stay online even after a disaster. On October 10, from a bit
after 14:00 UTC and for up to an hour (but probably not that long), you
won't be able to edit the wikis. This has been repeatedly mentioned in Tech
News, posted on Village Pumps etc, but please help spread this in your
communities, especially with regards to editathons etc.
You'll find more information here:

Hi everyone,
I am writing to share with you our fundraising report for fiscal year 2018
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising/2017-18_Report>. This report
is a collaborative effort on behalf of many teams: fundraising tech, ops
and donor services, major gifts, online fundraising, legal, communications,
and more.
The fundraising report offers us an opportunity to pause and reflect on
learnings from last year and also consider where we're headed, particularly
as we approach one of our busiest times of the year for fundraising. It's
also an inspiring reminder of how many people across the world support the
work of the community and WMF staff.
We welcome your questions and feedback.
Thank you,
Thea

Hello all,
Please accept my apologies if you are receiving this a number of times
today. We have sent it out to multiple mailing lists in order to reach as
many community members as possible.
It's coming close to time for annual appointments of community members to
serve on the Ombudsman commission (OC). This commission works on all
Wikimedia projects to investigate complaints about violations of the
privacy policy, especially in use of CheckUser tools, and to mediate
between the complaining party and the individual whose work is being
investigated. They may also assist the General Counsel, the Executive
Director or the Board of Trustees in investigations of these issues. For
more on their duties and roles, see
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ombudsman_commission
This is a call for community members interested in volunteering for
appointment to this commission. Volunteers serving in this role should be
experienced Wikimedians, active on any project, who have previously used
the CheckUser tool OR who have the technical ability to understand the
CheckUser tool and the willingness to learn it. They are expected to be
able to engage neutrally in investigating these concerns and to know when
to recuse when other roles and relationships may cause conflict.
Commissioners are required to identify to the Wikimedia Foundation and must
be willing to comply with the appropriate Wikimedia Foundation board
policies (such as the access to non-public data policy[1] and the privacy
policy[2]). This is a position that requires a high degree of discretion
and trust.
If you are interested in serving on this commission, please write me an
email *off-list* to detail your experience on the projects, your thoughts
on the commission and what you hope to bring to the role. The commission
consists of nine members; all applications are appreciated and will be
carefully considered. The deadline for applications is end of day on 31
December, 2018.
Please feel free to pass this invitation along to any users who you think
may be qualified and interested.
Thank you!
