Dear all,
On behalf of the Affiliations Committe, I am pleased to introduce the
launch of the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list, which is basically a
place for all the affiliates (chapters, thematic organizations, user
groups) to discuss issues related to affiliates, make announcements to
other affiliates, and collaborate on activities and community-wide
events. The idea is to help facilitate the dialogue affiliates across
our movement, plus collaborative discussions like community-wide
activities, joint edit-a-thons, regional conferences, blog/report posts,
or other communications from affiliates.
Each Wikimedia movement affiliate is allocated three spots on the
mailing list. All affiliates may contact the Affiliations Committee to
request additional spots if needed.
Please find a bit more information on Meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_movement_affiliates/Affiliates_ma…
and do not hesitate contacting us if you have further questions.
Regards,
Carlos

For those interested in seeing what the current round of Annual Plan Grant
applications are proposing, I've created a table of the 11 applicants'
documents and relevant reports:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Proposals/2015-2016_round1/Delib…
There's a lot of details that the various applicants have published,
describing both what they plan to do in the next year as well as reporting
on how things have gone in the current year so far. There is also the
community review page for each applicant where they have been answering
questions in public from FDC volunteers, WMF staff and the wider community.
Further down the same page, I've also created a comparative table of some
of the core budget items:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Proposals/2015-2016_round1/Delib…
This is all public information derived from the above documents. This
enables the community to see in one place how much the different applicants
are requesting; how this differs from their grant last year; what
proportion of their total budget this grant represents, etc.
Those of us on the FDC have spent the last few weeks reading all this
information - and believe me there's a LOT here if you read all of it! - in
preparation for the Round 1 deliberations that will take place soon (as per
Katy's email). Hopefully the creation of these tables will make it easier
for the wider community to get an understanding of what kind of work goes
into making, and also reviewing, an Annual Plan Grant.
Sincerely,
Liam / Wittylama

Glad to see long term planning and endowment discussion on the Board
agenda. Will the subjects of the long term planning discussion at the Board
meeting be more or less the same as the discussion scheduled for Metrics on
Thursday?
Thanks,
Pine

Dear Wikimaniacs,we are now calling for a scholarship review committee. This year, we additionally want a scholarship ambassador for each major geography or language, including a representative from each entity which pays for additional scholarships; the ambassadors will be committee observers. The scholarship review committee is an important and diverse group of volunteers who help to run the scholarship program in accordance with the pillars of this Wikimania. We encourage people from all Wikimedia wikis to apply for this position so that the committee can handle applications in many different languages. The main duties of the committee members prior to Wikimania 2016 are:
- Participation in periodic online meetings with scholarships program manager and other committee members.
- Review and edit communications material (e.g. Scholarship wiki, application questions).
- Assistance in determination of scholarship applicant requirements.
- Assurance of due consideration and speedy response time to Wikimania scholarship applications in multiple languages.
- Work with the local team.
For further information please visit m:Wikimania/Scholarships/Tasks (the committee will also be polishing this page). We are looking for Wikimedians from all over the world, who are:
- fluent in written English and have good communication skills, or can name local community member(s)/ambassadors who help them with English translations.
- discreet and able to handle confidential applicant information, and objectively assess candidates.
- willing to review scholarship applications in late 2015/early 2016.
- having either or both:
- previously attended Wikimania.
- strong knowledge of the cross-project Wikimedia community.
You will be working remotely. While we hope that scholarship review committee members will enjoy Wikimania 2016 by giving significant input to it, the local team cannot guarantee financial support for the committee members' travel expenses since scholarship review committee members may not apply for a scholarship themselves. If you're interested in serving on the scholarship reviewing committee and/or as scholarship ambassador, please send us an email at domande.wikimania(a)wikimedia.it. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.Deadline to apply is Sunday, November 15, 2015. The local team will contact all candidates and publish the list of scholarship committee members right afterwards. Please help with translations on wm2016:Scholarship committee.Proposed timeline
- Nov 1–Nov 15: Call for Scholarship Committee
- Nov 16–Dec 6: Preparations of the Scholarship Committee
- Dec 6–Jan 9: Submission time
Thanks,

Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Italia has started since this month a project with
"Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso" (Balcan and Caucasus Observatory,
<http://www.balcanicaucaso.org/eng>).
Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso (OBC) is a research institute focused on
South-East Europe, Turkey and the Caucasus which was launched in the
year 2000 and which is based in Rovereto (Trento), in the north-east
of Italy. The main focus of OBC is to produce studies and reports
related to freedom of the press in the 26 countries that they monitor.
They collaborate with a net of over 50 correspondents, including
journalists, researchers, and activists in the various countries.
With the help of WM-IT, OBC selected a Wikipedian in Residence for the
next months. His name is Davide Denti[1] and you can find his contact
in copy. Davide is a long-time Wikipedian, contributing on it.wiki
since 2007, he is also a PhD candidate at the University of Trento, in
Trento in the north of Italy, where is working on his thesis about EU
enlargement policies with respect to the western balkans and in
Bosnia-Herzegovina in particular.
The residence is fully founded through a EU project called "European
Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF)" <http://www.ecpmf.eu/>
with partners - both individuals, for example journalists, and
organisations - in several countries[2a][2b].
In the scope of this project we would like to come in touch with
Wikipedians in the region of Balkans that may find this project of
interest, we also think that you may be interested in building
relations with institutions in your country that participate in this
project.
We look forward to collaborating with you to make this project, and
the content on Wikipedia about Balkans and Caucasus, better.

Hello my friends,
After many years of Wiki Loves Monuments around the world, finally we organized an edition of that important photo contest in Brasil.
Following the success of WLE Brasil 2015(supported by our fellows from Wikimedia Ukraine) and counting with a lot of support from Romaine we finally completed that task after years of procrastination.
The WLM Brasil 2015 was organized by the Wikimedia Community Brazilian Group of Education and Research, including contributions from teachers and students in a new approach for our educational program.
Teachers and students from local universities supported us with marketing/communication and in the final process of pictures filtering for the judges evaluation.
You can see the final result of WLM Brasil and the winners at http://www.wikimedia.org.br/wiki-loves-monuments-brasil-2015-vencedores.html
