Wikimedia's been accepted as a mentoring organization for the 2007
Google Summer of Code program.
Here's our organization page:
http://code.google.com/soc/wikimedia/about.html
I put up an initial project list here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Summer_of_Code_2007
It's semi-protected so it won't be too vandalized ;) but additional
suggestions are welcome. I'd like to ask that people who aren't directly
involved in development not add too much to the main page directly,
though; last year we ended up with lots of project submissions for
things that weren't really considered high priority, so I'd like to keep
the list a little more ordered this time.
We don't know for sure how many projects we'll get assigned, so we'll
see. :) At least Tim and I will serve as mentors for the student
projects; if a couple more experienced developers would like to help out
with that too that would be super.
Last year's projects went really well up to the public demo stage but
never quite got integrated into the mainline; I'm hoping that this year
we can stick with projects that will be easier to slip in and take live
much earlier in the process, which should help keep the students
interested and the projects active.

These torrent files have only been tested against BitTorrent, Azureus,
Ctorrent, and rTorrent. ctorrent canot read files over 4 GB without
crashing. Azureus have changed their DHT distributed tracking formats
and have problems with generic BitTorrent .torrent files.
It may take a day or so to fully flush this out, but the torrents are up.

We have just launched http://planet.wikimedia.org/ , which is an
aggregator for all on-topic wiki-related weblog (blog) posts by
participants in Wikimedia projects. The planet can be found at:
http://planet.wikimedia.org/
To get added, please follow the instructions at:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Planet_Wikimedia
This is a kind of beta test, and right now, the planet is in the
English language; however, I have prepared a process for requesting
new languages to be set up here:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Planet_Wikimedia/New_language
So please add your support if you wish to aggregate blog posts in
another language.
Again, this is for on-topic posts, not for diary entries. All feeds
must either point to a blog which is almost exclusively about wikis,
or filtered (WordPress, Blogger and other common blog engines all
support filtered feeds by categorizing your posts, e.g., adding the
"wiki" category to all posts which you want to be included in the
planet). If this makes you feel uncomfortable, you can (in addition or
in substitution) add your blog to http://wikiblogplanet.com/ , which
does not filter posts for on-topicness. WikiBlogPlanet is run
independently by Nick Jenkins.
I hope that this new tool will allow us to share useful and
interesting information, as well as opinions, more effectively across
project boundaries.

I think what Shi Zhao means is how to set up another language (like Chinese)
for the Planet Wikipedia feed and to make it as wide-open as Wikipedia.
Shi-Zhao has collected some Chinese blog links in his zh.wp account so zh
people can know who is blogging about Wikipedia in Chinese. He has done that
a year ago.
Hope this helps.

maybe because it is sunday...
I was having a look at the press a few minutes ago, and I saw Essjay
real name plastered everywhere, and referred to a "fake", fired from
Wikipedia and fired from Wikia.
To be honest, whatever the degree of his mistake, my heart grieves for
him. He did not deserve to be shamed publicly in this way. I feel very
very sorry for him.

Hi,
It has recently (about two months ago) come to my attention that articles on
the Hebrew Wikipedia are speedy deleted. I translated the Jenna Jameson
article from the English Wikipedia and it was very quickly speedy deleted
and I was indefinitely blocked due to being a sockpuppet of some guy (of
course no checkuser request was done). By the way, I don't particularly like
porn articles or anything of the sort; in fact, I don't believe I've ever
edited a porn article on the enwp which I'm very active on. After a few days
(during which I complained on Danny's enwp talk page and thus got the
attention of a Hebrew Wikipedia admin and later spoke on the phone with
another admin from hewp) I was unblocked. I'm guessing there have probably
been other people who just gave up after they were banned and didn't return.
The situation is basically that if a user who isn't well-known on the hewp
(someone outside of a group of about 100 users) creates such an article he
will probably be perm-banned and if anyone else does so, the article will
probably just be speedy deleted. No rule has been passed on the Hebrew
Wikipedia regarding this and even if it had been passed, it would be in
violation of WMF (?) guidelines as Wikipedia is not censored. Some claim
that a rule has been passed but many admins disagree with this. The "vote"
was passed about two years ago and had 10-20 participants. In addition to
this, the vote came at a time when the Hebrew Wikipedia was repeatedly
vandalized by a certain user and many of the voters supposedly for the
banning of porn articles referred only to this specific case (this is
supported by their comments on the page).
By the way, just so nobody corrects me, on the Hebrew Wikipedia *there are
votes* since consensus is hardly ever reached and the total needed to pass a
vote is a ridiculous 55%. Anyway, despite all the above, a few admins have
said that they will speedy delete any porn articles created on the Hebrew
Wikipedia. Currently there are a few porn articles which are about the movie
Deep Throat and two other articles that I don't recall at the moment. This
is a foundation issue because the situation right now is effectively
censorship of articles that some people feel do not have a place on the
wikipedia. I know I will probably have those who disagree with me be
notified of this discussion at some point at which point the slandering will
begin and I will be called a "snitch" and possibly other more colorful terms
so I ask ahead of time for this discussion to remain civil. Although I hate
to burden Danny, who probably has a lot of more important things to do, he
is the only one who speaks both Hebrew and English and could take care of
this issue since he is obviously a person trusted by most. Anyway I think
I've written more than enough on an issue that should be pretty
straightforward, that is, that wikipedia is not censored.
Thanks,
Yonatan
I just saw the link to Planet Wikimedia in Meta's sidebar and thought
we could take it one step further.
Wikimedians, like all internet users, use a host of different services
and sites, some of which are community driven. How about a page
listing those user groups? Or perhaps a page with links to
wikimedia-related tags at various sites? Or both. ;)
Think Wikimedia(ns) on Flickr, Last.fm, Orkut, LinkedIn...

Hi folks,
On the 9th March 2007, at 8h00 UTC on #wikimedia-translation,
wikimedians had a meeting about the translation in the Wikimedia
projects
and about the TransCom in particular. 13 people participated at the
meeting, you can find the list of them on meta. [1] along with the
log.
Many issues have been talked during this two hours, and in my opinion
this kind of meeting is really productive. The issues were:
*The Translation Request page reform.
*The importance of translation among the projects communities
*How to inform the community of related and relevant issues about WMF
*Where to work?
*Recruitment of new volunteers and local coordinator
I will summarize the meeting, but if you have any question about the
meeting, the transcom or the translations, you're invited to join
#wikimedia-translation
channel on IRC (irc.freenode/net) and leave your question or to mail
"translators-l [at] lists.wikimedia [dot] org".
== The Translation Request page reform ==
On the last transcom meeting it has been raised problems with the
Translation Request page, next to this aphaia started to make a new
one. She has made a great
job and showed during the meeting what will probably be the future TR.
We talked about the organisation of the page, what to add, remove,
etc... the
page is still under construction and will be set up within the next weeks.
== The importance of translation among the projects communities ==
We all agreed that the translation was important to get more local
volunteers involved within the Wikimedia Foundation and the Chapters.
We talked about
how to get more people involved in the translations. There was many
problems interdependent. First we are actually outnumbered and the
translations of Press
Statement take many days, when they're translated. So we need to have
more translators, if we want more translators, we have to take time to
communicate with
the community. But we also need time to translate Press Statement.
== How to inform the community of related and relevant issues about WMF ==
So we have, and still are, talked on how to get more people involved.
We have listed what's
actually existing: LSS and the Wikizine. Actually none is mastered by a
committee, we discussed on how to get the transcom more involved.
During the meeting schiste putted a stress on a test make on the
french Wikipedia. Two announcement pages has been set up, one for the
foundation and the second for the local chapter.
As those pages have been created really recently and it needs a lot of
time , we will see in few weeks how to enhanced the use of this kind
of page.
== Where to work? ==
Actually the transcom does work on meta., and for translations it's
enough. But an issue has been raised, can't the TransCom become the
core committee between
the different communities and the foundation. On a first time we can
continue to translate the Press Statement, and the stuff from the
foundations, I do believe this
kind of translations needs to be easily reachable by the community.
meta. is a mess, newcomers can't find anything. If we want to have
more volunteers implicated in the foundation,
we need to be attractive. To get people involved we need to provide a
place where the community can find easily the main information, here
comes the idea of a "translation wiki".
It would be a wiki with important information, press statement,
foundation announcement, chapters report, etc... translated in many
languages. A wiki of this kind would be a way to
tempt people, and get them involved either in the foundation or their chapter
== Recruitment of new volunteers and local coordinator ==
As written above, this is a more than important issue. In the next
weeks the Translation Committee will communicate with the local
projects in order to find new members and to involve some people
as local coordinator. The TransCom needs to have more volunteers to
translate statements faster, and to provide more information to the
communities.
This is a quick summary of a meeting of two hours, we spoke of some
other stuff, but there are the more important ones. I hope the
transCom will soon have new
members.
All the best
