Prehaps below the toolbox would work instead (they are redesigning the
toolbar on Wikipedia and if it goes ahead one of the developers (Rob
Church I think?) is going to do a ptach for them). Couldn't we just
get a modified version of this and stick it below the toolbox like
they do on http://www.wikia.com . I like the idea of this and it would
definitely improve the visibility of the Wikimedia websites, the wikis
that are displayed in the one on Wikia always get loads more
attention.

I will crosspost this mail to several mailing lists that could be

From your answers I noted that being in different time zones and having
different requirements we probably will not make it to do a real
OmegaT-course online - some also don't have Skype. So I will be online
for sure tomorrow morning from 07:00-09:00 UTC and on Thursday from
07:00-09:00 UTC (corresponds to 09:00-11:00 Italian time). I very likely
will not be here on Friday morning.
Anyway I am online normally every morning in the mentioned hours as well
as in the evening. I'll try to create a schedule I update on a daily

Actually there is the WikiRead-WikiWrite feature for OmegaT being
programmed - so as soon as we have this it will be introduced. For now
most files will reach you as .txt files (even if this means more
organisational work). The way of doing things like above would be the
actual way to go, but I don't want people, who are new to wiki and
OmegaT to learn too many things at once - it could create more poblems
than doing good.
During the next days the texts to be tanslated will be prepared and I
will start to distribute them among the included translators. You will
see a schedule for each involved translator online so that you also will
be able to see from there who is going to do what and when. The links
will be added to the project page where you also find the how to's.
The Chat-logs will be made available as well through the main project page.

Dear All,
a quick report from the 5th Birthday of the Polish Wikipedia, which
took place last Saturday.
We met at the Warsaw School of Economics around 5 p.m. After a brief
introduction by Justyna (Creative Commons Poland) Jimbo gave his talk
on Wikipedia and wikis in general, Polish Wikipedia and Wikia Poland.
After that there was a session of questions and answers (a bit too
long, perhaps, but quite interesting at times even to a long time
Wikipedian such as myself).
Next, we move to two very brief presentations by Wikimedia Poland
members: Tomek "Polimerek" Ganicz outlined plwiki's first days and
history, I talked a bit about the future (as in the future of the
project and the future moves and goals of WMPL).
After that it was time to... party! We had a beautiful cake (see [1],
[2]) and champagne (see [3]). There was time for a few interviews and
some socializing. We also sung "Sto lat" ("Happy birthday").
Later we moved to a nearby pub for even more socializing, this time
without the media. You know, the usual geeky gathering - linux jokes,
the latest trolls on wikipl and all that stuff wikipedians like to
chat about. Alek (CCPL) even got Jimbo to drink something we call
"wściekły pies" (Polish for "rabid dog" - vodka with raspberry juice).
Don't worry, Jimmy survived it and only coughed for a little while. ;)
It was a very nice and cheerful event. The only downside was
attendance - we had thought more people would come. I can only hope that
next year there will be more interest.

Wikimedia projects exist in over 100 languages. Many of those
languages are spoken in countries which do not have chapters yet.
Would it be a worthwhile experiment, for every wiki that is in a
language without a chapter in the country/countries where it is
spoken, to put a note in the _registered user_ site notice, such as:
"If you are interested in starting a Wikimedia Foundation chapter in
[country/countries], please go to [page on Meta]"?
The process could be similar to the Wikinews language creation
process, i.e., there would have to be a minimum number of supporters,
who might also have to do some grunt work to prove commitment. Then
they would get their own chapter mailing list.
Unregistered readers would not see this notice.
We might define some preconditions for this:
1) Single login to make it easier to switch over to Meta
2) Logo / trademark agreements fully sorted out with existing chapters
3) Best practices document in place
4) Dismissable site notice so users won't be permanently annoyed by it.
But in general, do you think it's an idea worth exploring?

Hi Everyone,
Bengali Wikipedia (http://bn.wikipedia.org ) has reached the milestone
of 10,000 articles today. This is the 50th language to reach the
milestone, and the 2nd language from South Asia to do so.
Bengali is spoken by almost 220-250 million people, making it the 7th
largest language in terms of total speakers. Bengali Wikipedia has
seen a growth from 500 articles in March 2006 to 10,000 as of now.
There are now 20-25 active editors who edit Bengali wikipedia on a
regular basis. These editors are mainly from Bangladesh, and also from
West Bengal (India). The main thrust has been the Bangladesh Open
Source Network (BDOsn), and the Bangla Wiki project, which has raised
awareness, involved the media, and recruited more editors to work on
Bengali Wikipedia.
We also have article improvement projects, aiming at having at least
1000 or so Good articles (similar to English wikipedia) by May 2007.

1) Fill the pledge and post it on Foundation website themselves under
their own user account before 45 days.
2) Send an email with the pledge and their signature on this very list
before 45 days.
3) Fill up the questionnaire and send it to Brad, who shall be the
repository of these documents and so, before 45 days.
Since any board member can request to see these documents anytime, I
suggest the best choice is that Brad (as legal counsel) post the
questionnaire of each board member and staff member on the board wiki.
These documents will have to be posted by Brad on the board wiki before
46 days from today (The board wiki is accessible only to Brad and the
board).
Brad will have to ensure that any person having forgotten to fill up
pledge and questionnaire, will be personnaly reminded at least 10 days
before the deadline by email or any suitable trackable method (phone is
not).
I recommand that all staff and board members make the extra effort to
fill up these questionnaires before the board retreat. Though it is not
mandatory, it will be considered a good move and greatly appreciated.
Staff and board members will also note that they should mention any
change of their situation with respect with that policy as soon as
possible. Failure to respect decent times will be considered bad will
and prone to sanction.
Board members are reminded that they should retract voluntarily and
spontaneously from any vote which might cause a conflict of interest.
They are reminded as well that they should notify the board when their
participation to a vote might be perceived by the board or others to
cause a conflict of interest.
Failure to respect this policy can lead to be removed from the
organisation, and this, whether staff or board member.
