Bonjour,
Cet expos doit tre tap, puis imprim.

I am not one to complain frequently or quickly. I have been a software
developer, and I know the anguish that often involves, and the meager
thanks that are often received.
However, I am becoming quite concerned about the recent performance
issues on en.wikipedia. I don't know if there are similar issues with
other projects or languages.
As users, we are told (at
http://www.livejournal.com/community/wikitech/) that the issues now is
not hardware or the MediaWiki software, but rather load balancing. We
are also told to "try again" when we receive one of many ugly errors.
We are invited to help, but given no indication how we might do that.
This situation is very unsatisfactory, and is damaging to Wikipedia.
I know that the developers are very busy, and are volunteering their
time. I do not "blame" them for the problems. I don't really see this
as a technical issue. Obviously, the solution to load balancing will be
technical, but the solution to the larger issue (reliability rapid
response to problems) is an issue of the will and resources of the
Wikimedia foundation.
We cannot allow en.wikipedia (and perhaps others) to languish for days
with horrible response times and frequent, ugly user errors. We must
quickly determine what we need to do to remedy this situation, and
quickly act to implement the remedy.
With respect and concern,
Rich Holton

Wikipedia went live four years ago today, on January 15, 2001.
Amazingly, this crazy project we've gotten ourselves into is still on
the web, not _completely_ filled with Pokémon stubs and crackpot rants,
and even remains free of advertisements, supported by donations and a
lot of hard work.
Presented for your pleasure:

This is a dump of the English Wikipedia page database from December 20,
2001 -- the oldest complete copy I was able to find. It's actually
running on the current MediaWiki software, so as a conversion necessity
some pages have been altered to make links work correctly. (Due to
limitations in the original conversion script, this version may
actually contain some data which is missing or corrupted in the main
database history on en.wikipedia.org.)
You can find even older, though more fragmentary, bits of Ancient
Wikipedia using the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine:

hallo!
i've added a new proposal at
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_new_projects
with the following text,
Wiki Trivia
* Link to proposal on mailing list: -None yet-
* Naming suggestions: WikiTriva and WikiFacts
* Domain name: WikiTriva.org or WikiFacts.org
respectively. Where the sub domain could either
represent the difficulty (easy.wikitrivia.org) or the
main catagory (genetics.wikitrivia.org).
* Scope: A facts listing in the form of Qs and As
and possibly articles to more detiled information on
other wiki if such information exists with keywords. A
playing page might be a nice idea but should serve
mainly as a source for other application to retrive
data from. Might also benifit if a quick way to enter
facts is introduced (To use for ex with a firefox
plug-in).

Jon Udell writes a nice piece about the sad state of tech support for
high-end products (and how most people end up searching for answers in
scattered chat fora).
http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/01/07/02OPstrategic_1.html
I would enjoy using a wiki dedicated to product information, with a
level of detail and a breadth of coverage unsuitable for either
wikibooks or wikipedia. Right now lots of open-source products
maintain local wikis for users of their tools, but they too could
benefit from the wider audience of a unified public site.
Thoughts? Feel free to comment on meta:

A really nice article from Nicolas Rauline.
It comes from a long interview of Yann and additions of myself on our economical model. Thanks Yann !
Till now, their website had only written articles about wikis and once published a small announcement after I sent them the 1 000 000 article press release.
The journal du net is an important reference on the net in France, in particular in business/marketing.
With Nicolas, I raised up three issues I believe are important with regards to our future.
The first is about our financial resources and how we are gonna come up with our growth, as well as possibly finance distribution by other means than internet.
Second is about uses of our financial resources, and in particular whether we should soon hire (or pay by whatever mean) technical people to help support the project.
Third is about our involvement in political fights, such as copyright issues and such, which may impact our ability to raise funds.
I am interested in any input on these topics.
Cheers

I may have missed something entirely...
Onymous just mentionned on #wikimedia that wikinews was now in public

Is that so ?

Hello everybody,
the following text I posted in about 30 languages of Wikipedia:
---
In Berlin at Dezember 2004 there was the critique that there is not enough
connection in the work of all the different Wikipedias in their different
languages. I think, that an internationally linked writing contest should
be one possible chance to cooperate and work together. At March 1st there
will be the start of the second writing contest in the german Wikipedia so
I thought, we can start it as an international project. There had been
contests in the Wikipedia of the Netherlands
[[:nl:Wikipedia:Schrijfwedstrijd]], the german Wikipedia
[[:de:Wikipedia:Schreibwettbewerb]] and the english one
[[en:Wikipedia:Danny's contest]] and as far as I could see it, it worked
really good.
I hope you will join the Contest, please visit [[:meta:International
writing contest]] to find out more. -- [[Benutzer:Achim Raschka|Achim
Raschka aka Necrophorus]] 10:14, 11. Jan 2005 (CET)

It would be great, to discuss the contest and to coordinate stuff like
press releases, maybe extren judges, coordination on meta (if you likeI
will construct a Portal-Page on meta with joining languages and nominations
(as far as I´m able for that) and so on. I know, I didn´t discuss it on any
mailing list, but I think it´s a good idea so I started it. The time plot
was set before for the german contest and I think it´s time enough to
organize a contest in the other languanges until the contest starts at
March the 1st.
It would be great if I can get any reaction (maybe a bit more than to the
Wikikids-idea), I would tolerate all between "It´s a genius idea" and "What
in the hell´s came over you".
Greeting from Berlin, Achim aka Necrophorus
Since the start of the donations I have find it a waste for using a system like
paypall. This because you need a credit card and for the transaction fees that
are high, specialy for small ammounts.
1 $ - 0,33 $ for paypall = 0,67 $ Wikimedia
5 $ - 0,45 $ for paypall = 4,55 $ Wikimedia
The normal way of paying something in europa is whit a bank transfer. The cost
of a banktransfer inside the euro-zone is mostly zero or very very small.
Now, whit Wikimedia Deutschland, there is a European bank account.
http://www.wikimedia.de/spenden.html
Only the german translation of the fundraising page gives the option to donate
to that bank account.
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Fundraising
I suggest to give much more attension to this donation channel. For the English
version of the fundraising page put it where there is now "Donate via postal
mail". Include the information that a transfer inside de euro-zone is the same
price like a normal national payment and that this is the cheapst way for you
and Wikimedia.
The fundraising pages in the languages that are members of the euro-zone should
make this the first option of payment.
Many Wikipedias do not have a translation of the donation page. The is not
helpful to get mony.
If there not translation yet you can make one. You need a account for the
foundation wiki;

Hi,
The collection of quotes can be used for example:
- if the collector does not like the other editor, and knows his name, he can
find out his employer, and write to his employer defaming the author of the
quotes, for example.
-The collector can publish the quotes in any medium with for example paired
with a defaming description, hoping, that he hurts the author like that.
- If the author is a known person, the collector can publish a book with the
quote collection, praise the author of the quotes, and utilize the income of
the book solely for his own purposes.
Regards, Eleonora
>>
I would guess you are free to quote from another editor. (Though I
do not see the reason for creating such a page. In what way will
be such a page valuable?)
<<
>>
Who can help me, if I want to know, if it is legal, that a wikipedia editor
prepares a collection of quotes, that an other wikipedia editor wrote in
diverse articles, and puts this collection onto a wikipedia page? The quotes
are
exclusively from one wikipedia editor.
