For me, the merit of partial scholarships (except for costing less for the WMF and thus enabling more people to participate) is that the extra money one has to pay form their own pocket serves as a sign of seriousness and commitment on their part.

If the partial scholarships could somehow be defined, for example, to be 75% of the average flight cost from one's home to the conference, then those extra 25% (which could be USD 50 or USD 500....) will show one's seriousness.

Maybe this is a better and fairer way to calculate the partial scholarships than the EUR 300 sum we had this year.

The current setup does not seem to target non-attendees if I read the questions - none the less one of the querstions does give it as an option... *confused*

I think you can put the estimated cost of the flight, and still answer "no" I did not attend Wikimania 2011.

To answer Casey's question, the survey is unofficial and not covered by WMF or WikiDC privacy policies.

Anecdotally, I've heard feedback that the partial scholarships didn't work so great for everyone, and would be happy for more feedback/suggestions.  But answer the survey, knowing it's not covered by our privacy policies but if you trust Maarten... (I do)

Katie

But, I trust Maarten that

Hey,

On the Wikimania wiki we have some discussions on the best way to organize the "partial scholarships". We want to prevent that people from countries far away from the venue (Australia, Canada, thirld world countries, ...) stay home because the partial scholarship does not help them enough. We don't want them all to request a full scholarship, either.

Thanks for looking into these questions.  I'm very interested in feedback on how we might make the scholarships work better next time.

Cheers,
Katie

Please help us for the next conference, and fill in the questionnaire on https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dG1BaUJHZkpJS2puSHJuTGN0Sk9NcHc6MQ

Everybody can fill in this form (even if you didn't attend, or didn't find funding), so send this to everybody that wanted to come!

Grtz,
Maarten
