[apologies for cross-posting.]
Hi all,
If you are a representative of a chapter, user group, or affiliate [0]
attending Wikimania and interested to talk with the Research team at
Wikimedia Foundation, we would really like to meet you. Please read
on. Otherwise, please feel free to ignore this message.
-------
One of the empowering aspects of attending Wikimania for me in the
past years has been to be able to connect to many of you in person: to
build lasting relationships, to understand the challenges that you
face in your Wikimedia related efforts, and brainstorm with you about
how/if research can help you answer some of your open questions. These
conversations have been a source of inspiration for at least a few
projects that the Research team at Wikimedia Foundation has picked up
over the past years [1]. As our team is planning for our presence in
Wikimania 2019 [2], I only hope that we can have even more of this
kind of interaction together while we're in Stockholm.
To this end and in order to make the best use of our collective time
together, I'd like to propose an experimental meet-up during this
year's Wikimania where the interested representatives of chapters,
user groups, affiliates and the members of the Research team to meet.
In order to organize this session, we need your input and I have put
together a few questions at
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe1YZmgxkJJA2lO6jl_nmOL9pwhbNu5GKV…
that I'd appreciate if you answer if you find the idea of meeting up
interesting. If you do not want to go to the link above and still want
to provide your input, please send your responses to the questions at
the end of this email to me privately.
Whether the meet-up idea ends up being a useful one for you or not
will be determined by your responses. Independent of that, I look
forward to touch-basing with many of you soon. :)
Best,
Leila
[0] From earlier conversations with chapters, user groups, and
affiliates I've got the impression that it's useful to have a
dedicated session focused on these groups and their
needs/perspectives. This being said, this is not a hard rule. :) If
you are not a representative of these groups and you'd like to attend,
you're welcome to. Please fill out the survey.

Survey questions if you don't want to fill out the survey by going to
the link provided in this email:
Description:
[The following is a tentative description of the event and it may
change based on your responses to this survey. The agenda for the meet
up will be finalized on 2019-08-07.]
Let's use the opportunity of being in Wikimania to get together and
discuss the following and beyond:
* [10-min] An update about what the Research team at Wikimedia
Foundation has done since we met last year in Wikimania. We will
provide updates on "Addressing Knowledge Gaps" and research
contributions to "Knowledge Integrity".
* [5-min] What stopped us from doing more? What challenges did we face?
* [15-min] Let's talk longer term: what does it take to have a global
network of researchers around Wikimedia projects? Why is having such a
network important? Can we work together on this?
* [30-min or more] What are some of the most pressing needs/questions
that chapters, affiliates, and user groups face? (with an eye for
converting them to research questions.)
* ...

To learn more about the Research team at Wikimedia Foundation and what
we do, please visit https://research.wikimedia.org/ .
-------
Question 1. Are you interested to attend a meet-up with Wikimedia
Foundation's Research team?
Question 2. If your answer to the above question is Yes or Maybe,
please let us know which affiliate, user group or chapter do you
represent or are a member of?
Question 3. What is a good outcome of the meet-up for you if you
choose to attend it?
Question 4. If you have specific times and days that you cannot attend
the meet-up, please indicate them below.
Question 5. Anything else you'd like to share with us and we should
take into account when planning for this event?

Hello fellow Wikimania-goers,
I can’t wait to see you all in Stockholm next week. Excited to meet those of you I haven’t, to connect with those of you I have, to perhaps sample some Surströmming [1] with the most adventurous of you? Why not!
For those of you I haven’t met yet, I’m Elena Lappen with the Community Relations team at the Foundation. Our team works on projects that connect volunteers across the movement and keep communication flowing between Foundation staff and community members.
I wanted to write because our team recently launched Wikimedia Space [2], a platform being developed around the needs of movement organizers, newcomers, volunteers in underrepresented regions, and volunteers in underserved groups. I think it can support the work of many of you, leading up to Wikimania, during Wikimania, and beyond. Many Learning Days participants and general Wikimania attendees have already started signing up in order to coordinate before the event.
Wikimedia Space is a platform facilitating community exchange, made up of a blog and a forum. The blog publishes news by the movement, for the movement. The forum has moderated discussion boards with discussion facilitation tools, as well as a movement-wide map [3] and calendar [4], where you’ll see that other movement organizers have already started posting their events. The forum also accommodates closed groups, to allow for private collaboration between trusted peers.
Signing up is easy [5]. Join Wikimedia Space to chat about Wikimania, post an event, or ask any question pertaining to the Wikimedia projects. Tell us how we can build the platform to best support your work.
If you’re interested to learn more about Space or to share with me how we can improve it to meet your needs, please feel free to message me and we can set up a time to talk!
See you all in Stockholm,
Elena

Dear Sir,
I thank you for your answer. I was mainly interested in the medical side of the biomedical use of Wikidata as the session was included in the Health space. It is sure that attendees with limited medical knowledge will suffer a bit. However, I will simplify and explain the medical information during the session when needed. Concerning your first comment, the word "relations" is widely used in Biomedical Informatics domain to mean associations, relationships, statements or links. You can absolutely refer to a simple Google Scholar search query to verify that. https://scholar.google.ca/scholar?hl=fr&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=%22Biomedical+relati…. Concerning your second comment, I changed "of" by for as required.

The slides make sense to me and seem to flow well, highlighting important considerations for WikiData and Medicine; however, they may be challenging for audience members with less medical training.
On the penultimate slide:
1. you use the term "relations" where I would expect "relationships" - but perhaps I am misunderstanding the use of terms
2. you state as the third Challenge, "Decide the guidelines of the verification of relations by scientists " - this is hard to parse. Should the first "of" be "for"?

Hi all,
This email is not Wikimedia related, but I still would like to send it
to those who will attend Wikimania. I hope it's fine to share this
here.
I will bring somewhere between 50-100 (depending on weight) Web/Data
Mining/Algorithms related books (all in English) with me when I attend
Wikimania next week. I will give these books for free to some folks
who accept to take them back to a university in their country as long
as the country is considered undeserved and the university is not very
well resourced.
As I may get more than 2-3 responses, here's the process I'd like to
follow: If you're interested to be the person who takes some books
back to a university in your country, please send me offlist the
following information:
* How many books (how heavy:) can you take with you back to your country?
* Which university (and which library) do you intend to donate the books
to? Name, city, country.
I will then review this information with Ricardo Baeza-Yates [1] and
we choose a few universities from the list we gather to donate the
books to through you.
I need to hear from you no later than August 10 if you're interested
to be considered for receiving some books.
Thanks,
Leila

Dear Ms.,
I thank you for your answer. We are lacking reference books in the University of Sfax, Tunisia. I will be honoured if you donate 10 reference books to our university.

Dear all,
I thank you for your answer. I know about the possibility of uploading PDF files to Wikimedia Commons. I just asked if there is a way to upload my slides in PPTX format.
Yours Sincerely,

Thank you Jan, I was just about to suggest the same: convert to PDF and upload to Commons, then link on Wikimania site (this is what I did with my presentation in Lviv last year and I suppose is the common practice)
Houce if you need any help please let me know!
See all of you soon, Best wishes
Mina

If you want to upload them to Wikimedia Commons, usually the best alternative is to save your presentation as a PDF. Please add the category for space you are presenting in, what day you are presenting and, of course, that it is a presentation.

I thank you for your efforts. I have prepared PPTX Presentation slides for Wikimania 2019. I ask about how to upload them to Wikimania wiki.
Thank you for sharing your slides' sources. Please save them in ODP format (e.g. by using LibreOffice) and upload them on... ahem. I guess archive.org<http://archive.org> would be a good place, we already keep many Wikimania videos there.
On WMF wikis, these formats are currently only allowed on private wikis.
Federico
