Dear all,
It would be rather expensive to travel to the dorms directly through taxi from the airport, however I can see the appeal for a no-hassle journey. Expect around HKD230 for the ride in moderate traffic and a HKD5 surcharge for every piece of luggage.
The budget option is to take the airport bus E22 which costs HKD18 and brings you close to but unfortunately not exactly at the dorms. The bus stop you're getting off is called Kam Shing Road which is a stop on Junction Road, a main road next to the Baptist University. Walking directions from the bus stop can be found on http://goo.gl/maps/vuODx This involves crossing the pedestrian crossings at grade on Junction Road and Renfrew Road, and takes around 8 minutes walking downhill as Timea says. You may familiarise yourself with the walking environment by using Google Street View.
There are also other travelling options and the Organisers will write a joining instruction for those who are coming to stay in the dorms.
Best regards,
Alan

The first thing you need to know about the taxi system in Hong Kong is that there are three types of taxis in Hong Kong although you'll probably encounter one type of taxi only outside the airport.
The Urban Taxis (in red) go to every road in Hong Kong except the southern part of Lantau (the large island south of the airport) where it is only served by the Lantau Taxis (in blue). There's also a type of taxi called the New Territories Taxis (in green) which serve most but not all of the New Territories. For your journey to your accommodation you'd have to choose the Urban Taxis.
All taxis have meters and you're obligated to pay the fare on the meter. Please note that surcharges such as tolls and luggage will have to be paid on top of the metered fare and the driver will add them at the end of the journey. Details about the taxi fare can be found here: http://www.td.gov.hk/en/transport_in_hong_kong/public_transport/taxi/taxi_f…
There are very clear signs at the airport arrival hall to lead you to the taxi stand, make sure you choose the Urban Taxi line as other types of taxi can't bring you to Kowloon.
As I said, further information would be written by the Organisers this week so stay tuned.
Best regards,
Alan

Hi Deryck,
I am a WMF scholarship holder from India. On the online form, I mentioned
my dates requiring accommodation as from 8th to 11th August 2013. Now, I
have changed my travel plans, and I will be arriving a day earlier than
previously anticipated, i.e on the 7th of August 2013. Can you please help
me to change my accommodation booking so that I will be booked in for the
dorm from 7th to 11th 2013?
Thank you!
Sincerely,

Hi all,
With less than 3 weeks to Wikimania, it will be extremely useful if
detailed directions to reach the dorms from the Airport are uploaded.
http://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/wiki/Accommodation
It says "Hong Kong International Airport by public transit (1 hour 44
mins)"
Local Train / Bus?
Train/Bus numbers?
How to reach the station from the Airport ?
Nearest station for the Dorms?
Preferred transport mode?
It will be useful especially for those not from this part of
world/continent or familiar with the local transport system in the country.
Thanks in advance

N.B. I reach HKG on 8th Aug, 11 AM...So if someone is expected to arrive
around that time, please do contact me *offlist *.
Last week, it emerged to the surprise of Wikimania 2013's organizing
committee in Hong Kong that the tagline of this year's Wikimania, "Of one
mind in pursuit of our dream, all discord set aside" has caused some
concern. Those so concerned viewed it as mockery of the FDC process which
apparently left WMHK with no funding to continue running itself after
Wikimania.
Many of you who attended Wikimania 2012 will remember that the tagline was
announced at the closing ceremony of Wikimania 2012. Tom Morris even joked
on Twitter that "that's the new ArbCom motto".[1] We couldn't foresee the
future - we simply know that Wikimedia is full of imperfect people like us
so conflicts are abundant. However, given the concern expressed, and the
fact that the tagline will appear on the Wikimania 2013 T-shirts, I thought
I should explain the tagline fully.
The quoted song, Under the Lion Rock, is a soap opera theme tune from the
1980s. This song is often hailed as the unofficial national anthem of Hong
Kong. (Lion Rock is an iconic natural rock atop the hilly ridge which
divides Kowloon and the New Territories, so "under the Lion Rock" is a
metonym for all of Hong Kong.) For attendees from Hong Kong, these lyrics
show that this Wikimania embraces Hong Kong fully, and Wikimedians from
Hong Kong are just like everyone else.
For those who have been involved with Wikimedia for a long time, it is
obvious that there is discord all over the place. Wikimania is often seen
as the "cream" of Wikimedia, the "bright side" of everything. By picking
these lines for our slogan, we want to make the point (which hasn't ever
been as prominent in any past Wikimania) that we don't shy away from
conflicts. The "conflict" theme runs right through the proposed agenda in
our bid; it was even suggested that we invite a banned editor from Hong
Kong as keynote speaker. (That fell through. He never felt compelled enough
to show up in person.) The lyrics affirm that it is our shared Wikimedia
vision which brings us together, in a way that urges us to live with our
differences.
The outside world often thinks of Wikipedians as a homogenous bunch,
slaving away behind computers like robots. We want to say that we actually
disagree on lots of things, in ways that similar disputes would roll out in
real life. Hong Kong editors tend to be a bit proud of ourselves and quite
sceptic towards the current Chinese regime, such that we would go to any
length to fight against patriotic mainland Chinese editors and
panda-licking American editors. Although we would quickly switch sides and
stand with Chinese patriots when it comes to the Diaoyu/Senkaku dispute,
and the adamant insistence that "China"!="PRC" and "Taiwan"!="ROC". And
we're (surprisingly to most foreigners) rather Falun Gong sceptic too.
If people (Wikipediocracy?) insist on thinking that the theme decided a
year ago is a dig at the recent FDC furore, then they can put the same into
the mouth of any slogan we come up with. What we want to show with these
lyrics is that we are connected to all of Hong Kong at heart, and we don't
want to shy away from the differences between us in Wikimedia.
Full quotation of the chorus of "Under the Lion Rock", as translated by the
Hong Kong Government Budget 2002/03:[2]
*Of one mind in pursuit of our dream
All discord set aside
With one heart on the same bright quest
Fearless and valiant inside
Hand in hand to the ends of the earth
Rough terrain no respite
Side by side we overcome ills
As the Hong Kong story we write.*

Is there anyone coordinating shared accomodations. I am considering a
booking at the Best Western Grand Hotel, at roughly CAD 818 for 6
nights. Being able to divide that by two would be a big help.

Can someone explain the dorm room check-in procedure? Is the desk open
24/7? How is payment to be effected: credit/debit card or cash only? Is
there a cafeteria and/or lounge in the building? From when will the
transport to and from the conference venue be available and at what times?
Sorry if this info has all been previously posted elsewhere.

I registered for accommodations in the dorms over a month ago, but I have
never received any confirmation about this. With less than three weeks
until the start of the conference, would it be possible to let me know if I
will have a place to stay in the dorms or not? The registration system only
says that my registration has been received. Does this mean I have a place
to stay?
Dear guys,
I got a scholarship to attend Wikimania 2013, all arrangements are done! (Accomediation, Travel, ...)
I have applied for a visa as I'm an Iraqi citizin and sent all papers to HK immegration office as explained in their website.
