Mafoso,
I wholly agree. Thanks to you and Aubrey, I now know about this *20 million
euros* issue, which you so gracefully called "The unfortunate impossibility
in Italy that bars WM-it participation in this wonderful initiative". I
guess I can also see now why Lodewijk feels it would be too much work
"adding another country only for the tourists that visit it".
Learning about this issue boggles my mind. What about the gray-birds, i.e.
the people living in northern europe who move south to their cottage in
Italy during the winter months? Are they breaking the law when they upload
pics to commons of their Italian neighborhoods? My gut feeling would be to
just hope the problem disappears by itself over time, but of course if you
want to achieve a push for pics this year on commons that must be very
frustrating.
Good luck to everyone in Italy working on this trial - what a mess!

I just throw the idea if this was considered good
enough to take it into
considerationin the brainstorming ...
I hope the trial will be favorable to Frida and WM-IT.
Mafoso.

I'm afraid that waiving the fees for only
Wikimedia Commons would not
be free enough to actually use it on Wikimedia Commons. As I
understand it, the problem is not so much that WMIT is not allowed to
participate, but that this releasing of images under a free license
would be illegal under Italian law - only with foreigners we couldn't
enforce it. But I'll leave that to legal specialists.
I do think however that we have enough work to do without adding
another country only for the tourists that visit it - that number is
much lower than the people living there and much harder to target. It
would add some serious hurdles to the competition and organization.
But sure we can discuss it later, although there are many things to
discuss :)
Best,
Lodewijk
