). Then these articles would be translated to different languages and improved (just like the Catalan Cultural Challenge or the Umepedia Challenge). (If the photographed object for some reason isn't suitable for an article of its own then the local organizers could pick a suitable replacement.)

I fully agree that the writing contest is not specially focused for new editors and is somehow out of the scope of WLM main goals. Just shared our experience -just in case- someone want's to try it at home ;)
We haven't decided yet if we will join WLM14 or not as a photo contest (still dealing with WLE14), but is almost sure that we will do some kind of "writing thing" related to monuments for experienced local wikipedians (diff project, diff goals) -> We need articles to paste all the great photos documented since 2011.
I'll keep you informed on how it evolves.
