Hi all,
TL;DR
* We have developed a map feature for Wiki Loves Monuments 2017.
* If you are a local organizer, please read the details below to learn more
about what it is, what you can expect, ... :)
As you may know, the international team has been working on a series of
projects to make more of your more than 1.4 million monuments and the data
associated with them discoverable. To this end, we have worked on a series
of projects in the past months:
* With WMSE we have worked on Wikidata migration of monuments lists.
* For data already on Wikidata and geotagged, we have developed Monumental
which is the tool targeted at exposing the data we have and the ones we
don't have. :) This email is about this tool.
In the past week, we have put Monumental[0] in front of testers and the
overall feedback that we have got is that the tool is intuitive to use, it
is fun to explore the monuments using it, and it provides a smoother
experience for uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons. With this feedback,
we decided to set up Monumental for Wiki Loves Monuments during this year's
contest. This is an experimental tool and this email is going to provide
some details about what you can expect from the tool. We are also open to
hear your other comments on this front. :)
==How can I access Monumental?==
While Monumental is a stand-alone tool, there is a Wiki Loves Monuments
version of it that lives in maps.wikilovesmonuments.org [Please do not
share this link widely until we are ready to announce the page.] We still
have a couple of fixes we need to make to the tool.
== What if some monuments are missing in my city/country? ==
The maps on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org will only show monuments that are
listed on Wikidata, i.e.,
* It won't show monuments that are not (yet) on Wikidata,
* If a monument is in Wikidata but it's not geotagged (with P625 [1]), it
won't be exposed via this tool for now.
* If a monument is in Wikidata and geotagged, it will be exposed as long as
it has any value for property P1435 (heritage designation)[2] OR any value
for property P2186 (WLM identifier)
== What if I want to "fix" any data on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org? ==
All of the data comes from Wikidata, so you can make any corrections (or
improvements) on Wikidata directly.
== What if I see monuments on maps.wikilovesmonuments.org that aren't on my
country's list? ==
There may be a few reasons that monuments appear on the map that aren't
eligible for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2017 -- the local
organizers may decide to exclude certain monuments from the competition. To
avoid any misunderstandings, and yet to allow people to contribute photos
of monuments (even if they're not eligible to participate as part of this
year's contest), we will show a banner right above the upload link. --
example https://maps.wikilovesmonuments.org/object/406972
* If you are the local organizer for a country and you want this banner to
be removed for your country's monuments, i.e., if you want to accept any
monuments photo submission as part of your contest and via
maps.wikilovesmonuments.org, please contact us. We can remove this message
from the upload pages for your country.
* Everyone else, the message will be there and it is the responsibility of
the user to check the local rules and figure out if their upload is
eligible for the local competition.
* If you are the organizer for Ireland, Poland, Sweden or UK: you are
guaranteed that uploades via maps.wikilovesmonuments.org are uploads for
your campaign and they all should be considered. We do not show the warning
message in the upload pages corresponding to your monuments.
== How can I find photos uploaded via the map? ==
They will all appear in Category:Uploaded with Monumental.[4]
* If monument in Wikidata got value for P373 (Wikimedia Commons category),
image will be added to this category
* If not, picture will be added to category "Cultural heritage monuments in
X", where X is country name.
Comments and questions are welcome! :)
Best,
Lily, on behalf of Wiki Loves Monuments international team

Hi all,
As part of our local (Malta) WLM campaign, we have set up a couple of
screens in a local museum with rolling displays of photos submitted the
previous week. However, it is very time consuming to download each image
individually, so we are finding this problematic.
Is there a way to batch download all the images submitted by each
individual user (the WLM stats page allows you to view all photos by each
individual user, but not download them in one go)? This would make our work
so much easier!
Thanks,
Neville
Hi all,
There is a Flickr group organized to take photos of Guatemala City,
Guatemala. The challenge is that we're not sure if we have list of
monuments for Guatemala, or at least Guatemala City. The walk is
organized for the 24th of September, so we have a bit of time. Can we
put a list together and help this group take photos and submit as part
of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017?
The advantage of putting a list together now for Guatemala is that we
can take the photos from Flickr this year, and we also will have a
list that can make the work of organizing Wiki Loves Monuments in the
future easier. :)
Please share your ideas, pointers, etc. :)
Thanks,
Lily

Hi all,
A couple of people have messaged offlist asking for step by step
instructions on how to send MassMessages. User:SuperHamster has signed
up to document this on wiki but they have also provided the steps in
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T174967 (check under Description).

Hi all,
I'm writing only to inform you that we will organize a little editathon
on Wikidata, with the target to add informations about local monuments
(coordinates, adresses, categories, etc.).
It will be held in Trento (Trentino-South Tyrol, north Italy). I'm quite
sure that someone of you already organized something like this, but it's
the first time in Italy, so I ask you for suggestions.
I call it "Wikidata for WLM":
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Raduni/Wikidata_for_WLM_-_Editathon…
I know that a lot of thing can be done automatically (for example, with
QuickStatements) but this event will be the occasion also to teach and
to learn the basics of Wikidata for the local wikimedian community.
We also planned an "open door" for the people who needs help to upload
the pictures.
Greetings,
Cristian

Hi all,
Like every year, we need to put together a good international jury for Wiki
Loves Monuments 2017. It is a complicated and delicate process to come to a
balanced jury, and I would like to outline the criteria here, and ask for
your input. I have agreed to take the lead on this process, but I would
definitely welcome your input and help.
As in the past years, I think it is important to once again aim for a jury
that as a whole is neutral and balanced in many ways, This ideally means:
* A mix of photography experts, heritage experts and Wikimedia experts
(aiming at a total size of 7-9);
* Geographically balanced so that no two jury members come from the same
country;
* Balance in any other ways imaginable (while at the same time
acknowledging that one can never ensure a complete balance in all respects);
* The international jury members do not serve on a national jury for WLM.
At the same time, there are some practical considerations:
* Jury members must be able to read and write in English;
* They must have the time to commit themselves to judge 200-500 photos in
three round over a period of 3 weeks in November;
* While jury members can participate in a local competition, their photos
cannot participate in the international finale;
* Jury members should not participate in any jury for 2017 (previous years
is OK);
* It would be helpful if the juror were willing to share their real name
for the jury report;
* Jury work is carried out in a voluntary capacity.
Should you know of anybody who you believe would make a good juror, please
contact me privately with the suggestion. The information I would need at
this stage is who the potential juror is, how I could contact him/her, and
why you believe they would make a good jury member (and whether you have
reason to believe that they would accept the nomination, if asked).
Your help in this would be extremely valuable in ensuring that our
international jury is as qualified, diverse and balanced as possible.
Thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Neville

Hey all,
I was curious, does anyone know how to get a quick overview of all uploads
to commons in a given day of photos (excluding vectors etc), that do /not/
have the {{wiki loves monuments}} template?
I'm asking because I just received a note on the helpdesk from an Indian
uploader that managed to upload a photo without the template - probably
through an alternative uploader or a malfunction. As they say, for each
person that finds their way to the helpdesk, there are probably 100 that
don't - so it would be nice if we could check the uploads for images that
look like they are WLM pictures, but are not tagged as such. That would be
the best way to identify bad instructions or pathways :)
Best,
Lodewijk
Hi all,
I'd like to share with you some more information about the workings of
our partnership with Flickr and the current state of things. Read on
if you're interested, please. :)
==What is this email about?==
We are talking about the partnership between Wiki Loves Monuments and
Flickr as described earlier. [1]
==What is the state of matters on Flickr end now?==
* Flickr organizers are signing up to organize photowalks in their cities. [2]
* For every city that signs up on Flickr end, we create an entry in a
table on our end [3] where the organizer can find information about
where to find eligible monuments.
* Flickr community folks make sure that the instructions for Flickr
photographers [4] are clearly communicated and received by Flickr
organizers. This will happen mostly this week through one on one
back-and-forths between the organizers and community managers.
* Flickr community folks monitor uploads to different groups and try
to catch issues if they happen (wrong tags, wrong kind of photos,
etc). Starting mid-September, they start sending out blast messages to
participating Flickr groups with information that helps photographers
improve submissions (fix tag issues, license reminders, etc.)
==I see cities from countries that are not participating in WLM 2017==
This can happen, thanks to the photographers and organizers on Flickr
end who decided to help us improve Wikipedia, even if the country
doesn't have a WLM 2017 contest. :) We welcome photos from all
countries for which we have access to lists, though if a country is
not participating on our end, the photos won't participate in the
contest. We have made sure this information is clearly communicated to
photographers.
==How can we help the Flickr organizers and community?==
We put this question in front of Flickr's community folks and here is
what we heard:
* If there are Wikimedia photowalks happening, please consider adding
them to [3]. If you do so, Flickr folks read this as a signal that
they can list your walk as part of [2]. This way, you can get some
Flickr photographers as part of your walk, too. :)
* If you are an organizer for a country in Asia, please be aware that
Flickr folks will really like if you can organize a photowalk in your
city or help them organize one for you.
* If you are on Twitter, follow @Flickr. They will share information
about the photowalks and beyond there, and you can help them spread
the word about the walks by retweeting their tweets.
As always, comments and questions are welcome! :)
Best,
Lily, on behalf of the international team
