In early mailings we talked about possible problems taking photos in private properties. Recently we have dealed with a real case. One of the awarded photos selected in first instance for local prize of Catalonia was an interior view of Casa Batlló. A jury member realized that it could be problematic without the consent of the propietary. He contacted Casa Batlló S.L., a private company that manages the building, and he was informed that all visitors are awarded about taking photos in the interior for commercial purposes [1]. They were willing to cooperate offering to sign an agreement for using the image on Commons and WLM website but not by third parts. Although such agreement is only binding for the photographer, we can not accept it as a free image.
Such case is explained on Commons [2]. In brief, the image is accepted on Commons as the work is not copyrighted and it is up to the photographer to follow private rules of the propietary.
The local comitee and jury decided to do not accept this image for the contest as we warned on the website about taking photos in private properties. We could not take any risk and we could not compromise our sponsor. The author has been informed and he understands the decision as he was not aware at all, unfortunatly, of the commercial use condition of the license.
I have added a warning note on the related category at Commons [3]. Just to note that two images from this category, by other authors, are among the 343 ones selected in first round for Art Nouveau prize.

Hi,
Reading Odder's etherpad reminded me I still wanted to send this mail.
Before and during WLM a lot of tools has been written again, the api
was well written and there are some other things.
However, there is still a big part missing, and that is a proper user
interface (UI). You have all kind of search options, but the average
user doesn't want to change urls to do that. So I think one of the things
we should aim for next year is to get a proper UI implemented.
Something to put on the agenda for coming thursday?
Regards,
Andre
Hi all,
once upon a time, we promised that there would be an extensive survey
asking for your feedback regarding the organizing of Wiki Loves Monuments.
The time is now! Please find it on
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dEVnT250QUxnY…
.
It is quite long (and thorough) however, so take your time for it. I
sincerely hope someone from each country will fill it in, but also that
multiple people from many countries will fill it in.
It is not necessary you were an organizer, but it would be nice if you were
involved in /some/ way. Please limit your answer length so the answers are
still analyzable. Long replies fit best on this mailing list.
Please fill in before coming Monday. I know it is a short time period, but
I would like to be able to analyze the feedback before our meeting next
week.
Thanks a lot,
Lodewijk
Dear all,
I was pointed out recently that the evaluation of next week wasn't entirely
known to everybody, so let me try to make it up to you. I was under the
impression we already discussed it - but it seems I have mixed up some
discussions and lists. My apologies.
As already decided many months ago, we would organize a survey (which I
sent you an email about yesterday - we have already 15 replies, thanks for
those!) and a real life evaluation meeting. As you may understand, we
didn't aim for a similar size and participation like the Berlin meeting
this spring, but a rather smaller meeting with 10-15 people. We were
luckily able to connect it to the 'GLAM'-Camp that is being organized in
Amsterdam 2-4 December, and will be sharing some facilities. We reserved 1
December for this evaluation meeting.
The goals will be aimed towards the future - to guarantuee the best
possible lessons and documentation. We will try to discuss and document the
best ways to organize Wiki Loves Monuments or a similar event, the lessons
we all learned and to draft out some kind of documentation to make
organizing also easier a next time. We will also do a little bit of
brainstorming about possible organization in 2012, but the focus will be
with lessons, discussion and documentation.
In my perfect world (and whether that will be a real world will have to be
determined) we will organize Wiki Loves Monuments again in 2012. In my
perfect world, the scope would be broadened beyond Europe that year. I am
myself willing to make some commitment to organizing WLM in 2012 on an
international level again, if there are enough other people willing to
participate. I have the feeling that material needs (funding etc) will not
be the bottle neck considering the positive reactions we have received so
far. Wikimedia Nederland has at least already reserved some rough budget to
make an international organization again possible. Hopefully more about
that after the evaluation meeting. If you are interested in helping the
international organization however, I do hope you will fill in the survey,
and identify that offer as well. That is the easiest way of collecting that
information.
So being practical: The evaluation meeting will be in the Public Library of
Amsterdam on December 1st. It will be a one day meeting, with some 10-15
people. The exact agenda is still to be set - we will probably base it
somewhat on the outcomes of the survey and a definitive agenda will
therefore not be available very eary unfortunately.
Tomasz has been trying to collect as many issues, topics and ideas as
possible for this meeting on this etherpad:
http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/WLM-2011-summary . You're very much welcomed
to join in and give your suggestions. That also will help identify topics
for the work meeting next Thursday in Amsterdam.
Looking forward to a further fruitful cooperation,
Lodewijk
Thanks a lot, Charles. :)
But I thought we should have the images take most of the page, not the
calendar. What do the others think?
Cheers
Nicole

Dear all,
we are still discussing about the layout of the WLM calendar.
Current status is: http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/WLM-calendar
I have been talking to some friends about the design of the calendars.
Two things:
1. The size of the images: Is the designer allowed to cut / crop the
images to make them fit into the design? Of course, within reasonable
margins, with commons sense. I have attached an example of the lol
porn calendar, which I find quite nice. But since we have different
formats and sizes of images (imagine one image like this on the page:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/78/St_petersburg_4.jp…),
it would anyway be difficult to have all pages look equally nice.
2. Do we really want these blank fields for handwritten notes? In my
opinion, the calendar should be more like an art calendar than a
"practical" thing. Everyone carries around their calendars in their
pockets, you don't need to "disrupt" the well and cleanly designed
calendar by writing some stuff on it. The value of the calendar lies
in the images, not in the calendar feature.
What do you think? Add your comments to the etherpad, please.
Best,
Nicole

Hi all,
Please find attached the data table of the Wiki Loves Monuments
participants survey. 790 replies are included, but i have removed some of
the most obvious duplicates.
I look forward to people turning this into something exciting! I would love
some statistics both on country and international level, both country of
participation and where they live. Also it would be nice if every local
team could take a look into the specific suggestions in their country.
Best,
Lodewijk
Charles, that would be awesome!!
Cheers,
Nicole

Hi Charles,
Thank you. Like requested before on this list, I hope you will send a blog
post suitable for wikilovesmonuments.eu (formatted like the other examples
sent on this list) so that we can publish it there, too!

Dear Wikipedians,
As part of Europeana's special Art Nouveau competitions we just
(re-)published 360 of the best Art Nouveau photos on the Europeana
Flickr account. This means we've reduced the nearly 3000 photos
categorized for the Art Nouveau competition by the Wiki community. The
images, divided into sets, can be found here,
http://www.flickr.com/photos/europeanaimages2/collections/72157628008148
113/
The idea is then that until December 5th people will be able to "vote"
for their favourites. Actually, it's using the Flickr favourite function
that counts as a vote. There are no really strict rules to the voting,
just favourite the ones you like and as many as you like and we'll count
the votes.
Based on the popular vote and selection by the Europeana internal work
group and jury we'll then make a special Wiki Loves Art Nouveau
exhibition on the Europeana exhibitions platform(at
http://exhibitions.europeana.eu/exhibits/browse?tags=europeana-en ) .
The exhibition will encompass about 50-100 photos with the winner of the
Art Nouveau competition showcased especially.
We would be really happy and grateful if you could all help in spreading
the word about the popular vote on Flickr on your blogs, through your
Twitter accounts and mailing lists. The Europeana blog post announcing
this can be found at http://blog.europeana.eu/ and please feel free to
translate it or link back to it.
Best regards,
David
