Why not? If you want to say something you don't want the world to
hear, saying it on a mailing list seems a poor choice of place to say

I think he is reffering to the guy who got a private mail forwarded to
the list and wished his name off it. That sort of thing. I think that
those rare cases can be handled on a case by case basis and removed by
a developer.
Ohh, and amongst the reasons for the archives is so you can link it
from wikipedia so those poor sods who don't subscribe can read an
important message. So making it only for subscribers would be bad.
