Hi everyone,
Among our development goals this year is to make the lexicographical data
part of Wikidata easier to understand for people not familiar with
lexicography. This included reworking the Lexeme creation page to improve
the editing experience of users. We plan to replace the Special:NewLexeme
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:NewLexeme> page with the new one on
November 2nd!
As you may recall, we made a number of tweaks to the old page and asked you
to test it and give feedback (see the previous announcement
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikidata@lists.wikimedia.org/me…>).
We addressed the issues the community raised, and we would like to thank
everyone who participated in the testing and provided feedback.
While the new Special:NewLexeme is already scheduled to be deployed, we
would still like to hear what you think. If you have any questions or
suggestions please let us know here
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:Lexicographical_data#New_Lexeme…>
.
Cheers,

Hello everyone,
The next Research Showcase will be live-streamed Wednesday, October 19, at
9:30 AM PST/16:30 UTC. Find your local time here

Members of the Research team will collect questions on IRC at
#wikimedia-research and YouTube.
This month's presentation is a panel discussion celebrating Wikidata's 10th
birthday!
October 2022 marks the tenth anniversary of the launch of Wikidata (
www.wikidata.org). In ten years, this project has become the largest
community-driven free knowledge graph in the world, enabling a common
knowledge base for Wikimedia projects. The language-independent nature of
Wikidata has greatly improved the maintenance and consistency of knowledge
across Wikipedia language editions, fostering knowledge equity in
Wikimedia. In addition, since Wikidata is a collaborative project that can
be read and edited by humans and machines alike, it is also widely used in
third-party applications delivering knowledge as a service for all. The
Wikimedia Research community has devoted significant effort and resources
in studying the foundations, capabilities and applications of Wikidata,
from the complex requirements of representing real-world knowledge in a
multilingual environment to the needs to assess the quality of data and
sources in Wikidata. To learn more about the state of the art of Wikidata
and research challenges in the era of AI/ML, we will celebrate this tenth
anniversary with a panel that will bring together established
researchers/practitioners in this field.
The panel will be moderated by Denny Vrandečić (WMF) with panelists Lydia
Pintscher (WMDE), Elena Simperl (King's College London), Katherine Thornton
(Yale), and Markus Krötzsch (Technical University of Dresden).
You can also watch our past research showcases here:

We hope you can join us!
Warm regards,

Subject: [Talk-GB] Welsh Government is now using a Welsh-language
baselayer largely based on OSM
To: talk-gb(a)openstreetmap.org <talk-gb(a)openstreetmap.org>
Hi all
I thought this might interest some of you. The Welsh Government's new
mapping platform Data Map Wales (used for publishing and sharing
public geo data) now has an optional base layer entirely in Welsh.
This is largely based on OSM data (with some additional names from
Wikidata.
Data Orchard CIC supplies the data to the platform though our Mapio
Cymru project. Welsh Government creates its own tiles. We originally
looked at serving tiles from https://openstreetmap.cymru but, of
course, Welsh Government use a different projection so this caused
some distortion.
They take data via Mapio Cymru rather than from OSM directly because
we apply some additional rules and bring in names from Wikidata where
appropriate. This also means that as we improve Welsh name
identification they'll get the benefit of that.
We'll be publishing a blog post about it today at https://mapio.cymru
and there's an online article about it at
https://nation.cymru/news/users-of-digital-mapping-platform-can-now-visuali…
Any questions, suggestions or comments welcomed.

Hi Admins on Wikidata and Wikipedia,
Now that I've moved to China permanently (Wow the internet is super fast!),
looks like I will need to ask for an Ipexempt since I need to use my VPN
always when accessing any Wikimedia/Wikidata projects. I knew that this
would be needed prior to my move, however, I didn't realize how cumbersome
the Ipexempt request process might be in my case because of the VPN usage.
For example, I cannot seem to complete the Appeal a block which is
suggested for VPN users to go through if I understand all the pages I read
through[1
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IP_block_exemption#Requesting_and_g…>
,2 <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Unblock_Ticket_Request_System>].
It seems it asks for the IP address? but in my case it would need to be
global, since the VPN services I use route me all over the world to get
around safely and securely. Here's the error that I got when trying to
Appeal... Seems like that Appeal page should include a checkbox
alternatively to ask "Yes, I need global ip exempt since I will be using a
VPN always" ?
Thanks in advance! If there is another process I need to try to follow,
then please let me know in your reply and I'll do my best to try that other
process. The talk page template for the unblock request didn't work either
since I cannot edit my talk page because of IP blocking.

Hello everyone,
The eighth workshop on the topic of "How to interact with Wikidata via
Pywikibot" is coming up - it will take place on Friday, October 7th at
16:00 UTC. You can find more details on the workshop and a link to join
here: <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Workshops#How_to_intera…>
[1].
This workshop will summarise how to access and save information to
Wikidata, including through page generators and queries*, using Pywikibot.
It will also cover the Wikidata conventions about the bot editing,
including the bot approvals process (*queries not included, please bring
your own!). This session will be run by Mike Peel.
To participate in this workshop, you would need basic familiarity with
Wikidata and Pywikibot installation.
We look forward to your participation!
Best,
Srishti
