This hasn't been around for very long, but already has made my weekly work
with Wikidata nearly painless now ! (SQID is nice but its UI was built for
a different purpose, i.e. Faceting and not quick Categorical listing)
*Wikidata Property Explorer's
<https://tools.wmflabs.org/prop-explorer/>* POWERFUL
sub-branching listing view makes it super easy to find an area of interest
for Properties. SQID only has a long Class listing dropdown with no
hierarchy in it to help users drilldown through the subs.
For instance, just today I needed to find a property that is related to
"use" or "ownership".
BAM ! I scrolled down on Wikidata Property Explorer's sub-branch list and
found the sub-branch that looked interesting: "Wikidata property regarding
utilization and ownership"
Clicked on it and got the properties I couldn't recall quickly. P1535 and
P2283
Kudos to Steven Liu <https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Stevenliuyi> !!!
This needs to be the default Property search tool !

Dear all,
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
TL;DR: soweego version 1 will be released soon. In the meanwhile, why
don't you consider endorsing the next steps?
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Hjfocs/soweego_1.1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a pre-release notification for early feedback.
Does the name *soweego* ring you a bell?
It is a machine learning-based pipeline that links Wikidata to large
catalogs [1].
It is a close friend of Mix'n'match [2], which mainly caters for small
catalogs.
The first version is almost done, and will start uploading results soon.
Confident links are going to feed Wikidata via a bot [3], while others
will get into Mix'n'match for curation.
The next short-term steps are detailed in a rapid grant proposal [4],
and I would be really grateful if you could consider an endorsement there.
The soweego team has also tried its best to address the following
community requests:
1. plan a sync mechanism between Wikidata and large catalogs / implement
checks against external catalogs to find mismatches in Wikidata;
2. enable users to add links to new catalogs in a reasonable time.
So, here is the most valuable contribution you can give to the project
right now: understand how to *import a new catalog* [5].
Can't wait for your reactions.
Cheers,
Marco

Hello all!
We are currently dealing with a bot overloading the Wikidata Query
Service. This bot does not look actively malicious, but does create
enough load to disrupt the service. As a stop gap measure, we had to
deny access to all bots using python-request user agent.
As a reminder, any bot should use a user agent that allows to identify
it [1]. If you have trouble accessing WDQS, please check that you are
following those guidelines.
More information and a proper incident report will be communicated as
soon as we are on top of things again.
Thanks for your understanding!

Reminder: Technical Advice IRC meeting this week **Wednesday 3-4 pm UTC**
on #wikimedia-tech.
Questions can be asked in English, Persian!
The Technical Advice IRC Meeting (TAIM) is a weekly support event for
volunteer developers. Every Wednesday, two full-time developers are
available to help you with all your questions about Mediawiki, gadgets,
tools and more! This can be anything from "how to get started" over "who
would be the best contact for X" to specific questions on your project.
If you know already what you would like to discuss or ask, please add your
topic to the next meeting:

Hello all,
This is an important announcement for all the tool builders and maintainers
who access Wikidata’s data by *querying directly Labs database replicas*.
In May-June 2019, the Wikidata development team will drop the wb_terms
table from the database in favor of a new optimized schema. Over years,
this table has become too big, causing various issues.
This change requires the tools using wb_terms to be updated. Developers and
maintainers will need to *adapt their code* to the new schema before the
migration starts and switch to the new code when the migration starts.
The migration will start on *May 29th*. On May 15th, a test system will be
available for you to test your code.
The table being used by plenty of external tools, we are setting up a
process to make sure that the change can be done together with the
developers and maintainers, without causing issues and broken tools. Most
of the documentation and updates will take place on Phabricator:
- In this Phabricator task <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T221764>,
you can find a description of the changes and the process, and you can ask
for more details or for help in the comments. This is also where updates
will be announced if necessary.
- On the Tool Builders Migration board
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/wb_terms_-_tool_builders_migration>
you will find all the details about the migration, how to update your
tool <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T221765>, and you can add your
own tasks.
- If you need to discuss with the Wikidata developers or get more
specific help, we set up two dedicated IRC meetings and a session at the
Wikimedia hackathon. More information in this task
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T221764>.
We are aware that this change will ask you to make some important changes
in your code, and we are willing to help you as much as our resources allow
us to. We hope that you will understand that this change is made to avoid
bigger issues in the near future.
Note that this change is not impacting Wikibase instances outside of
Wikidata. A dedicated migration plan and announcement will follow.
We strongly encourage you to not wait until last minute to make the changes
in your code. If you have any question or issue, we will be happy to help.
In order to keep the discussions in one place, please ask questions or
raise issues directly in the Phabricator task and board.
Thanks for your understanding,
Cheers,

Hello all,
Due to technical issues, the JSON dumps for this week and last week
couldn't be properly generated.
- 20190624 because of a commit that was fixing another bug (phab:T226601
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T226601>)
- 20190701 due to an issue with qualifier hashes (phab:T227207
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T227207>)
We apologize for this inconvenience. The problem is about to be solved, so
we expect the situation to be back to normal next week. However, we will
not generate the previous failed dumps.
Thanks for your understanding,
