Hey ho!
Just a little reminder: In September we will *delete* what is left on
Toolserver!
Write to ts-admins(a)toolserver.org to request your backup before August
31st.
If you are interested in migrating, maintaining, resurrecting someone
else's tools, please contact that person and ask first!
If you are contacted by others for you own code, I strongly encourage
you to *free the knowledge* and let them work on it.
(Yes, sometimes old work looks embarrassing nowadays, but it can
always help others to figure things out, to get ideas, to improve
tools. So for the "greater good"[TM] please free it.)
Also: It turns out that until now there are people in this wikiverse
who haven't noticed their Toolserver accounts are about to vanish
forever. So if you happen to talk to others, please spread the word!
Thanks and cheers,
Silke

Hey all,
there we are on the day after account expiration. A few words on what
is going to happen to the code left on Toolserver.
First of all THANK YOU for migrating so many tools!!! It's awesome
that so many of you made this extra effort and I know that for many
this has been / still is very demanding and time-consuming!
I would also like to thank all those among you who worked on the
migration process itself, who gave me information, explanations and
ideas, who reminded me of stuff or just *did* useful stuff. This has
been very helpful for me as you know much more about the Toolserver
and its integration into the Wikiverse than I do.
Nosy, Mette and Coren still have a lot of work ahead, too, but thanks
a lot to you as well, for helping all the users during migration and
for having issues on the radar!
Finally, thank you again, DaB., for the years of commitment you put
into the Toolserver and its community. And thanks to River whom I
never met but who left structures other admins could deal with.
What's next?
To those who haven't migrated: Quite a lot of you can find your tools
on this list already:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Tool_Labs/Collection_of_issues_after_Toolser…
About migrating now:
You can still get your backups from ts-admins(a)toolserver.org and
migrate. There are some volunteer helpers around on that page (lower
part) so if you need support, ask them. Once you've created a "tool"
in Tool Labs and uploaded your files, you can add other maintainers
with a click.
About other people's files:
Valhallasw, you asked if someone could get all the backups and archive
them. The problem are the private files in there (esp. in the home
directories). Nobody can sit down and sort the files of hundreds of
tools and decide which ones to give to others. This is why we hand
over backups to the owners only.
The contents of your public_html folders were accessible until
yesterday. If they are under a free license (and this has to be
checked in detail, too), we strongly recommend to contact the authors
about reusing the code because some might not be completely
comfortable with others looking at their code in detail.
I would like to encourage all of you to let other interested people
work on your code. It's a great opportunity to learn from how others
deal with it / from what they make out of it. So, if you are contacted
by others, it would be cool if you freed the knowledge!
If others turn to us / the ts-admins and request access to your
public_html folders and it's free software, we will contact you if
possible. If we don't hear from you then, we will hand it over,
assuming that this is why you put it under a free license.
About deletion of data:
Backups are kept until August 31st 2014!
Once Toolserver will be physically decommissioned in Haarlem, we'll
have to purge all hard disks. So please come and get your backups or
other people's code you want to work on *before August 31st*!
Cheers,
Silke

Hello folks,
as announced at 16. November I retired as root today.
Normally you write in such mails that you are sad now and that you had a
great time while it lasted. But I’m glad that it is over.
Don’t get me wrong: There were times when the work was great and most
times the work was even fun. But there were also several times
(especially in the last 2 years) when the Toolserver was horror. WMDE
didn’t invest enough money, WMF found new problems with the TS, hardware
was broken or the users (both authors and tool-users) were ignorant or
impatient.
If I had knew in autumn 2011 how the Toolserver would developing in the
coming years, I had not overtake as main root. I learned the hard way,
that it doesn’t matter how much work and time you invest if the
leadership (WMDE and WMF) work against you; and the members of WMDE and
the Wikipedians (at least in deWP) were no great help either.
I learned many things (in technical and political sense), met nice
persons and helped to give the Wikimedia-universe some great tools,
that’s the positive side I take with me now. I’m sure that I will miss
the Toolserver and its users from time to time.
Those of you who switch to Labs I wish good luck. All of you (if retired
already or not) I like to thank for the good times and I wish you the
best for your future :-). I’m sure that I will meet some of you in the
coming years again.
Sincerely,
DaB.
Hello all,
as I announced before I will retire in a few weeks. To give you all a
exact date and so some dependability in planing, I hereby announce to
retire as root at
FRIDAY, 3. January 2014 24:00 MEZ.
I will use most of this day for clean-up, so if you want something you
should contact me the day before. After the date I will not be able to
re-new accounts, add ssh-keys or clean-up /tmp-partitions (so Wolfsbane
will become unavailable more often). If you need something after the
date, please try to reach Nosy or Amette during their work-hours.
Two days later my normal account will expire, which will end my work for
the Toolserver. I will send a last mail to you all than.
Sincerely,
DaB.
Hello all,
for adding a SSL-certificate I need to restart the web-loadbalancer
and/or the webserver (not sure at the moment). I plan to do this at
SUNDAY, 13:00 UTC.
If all works right everything will be done in <1 minute, but if there
are problems there could be some downtime (max 1/2h) for webpages.
Sincerely,
DaB.

Hello all,
how the WMF announced [1], the password-hashes and email addresses of
many users were public accessible in WikiLabs (and so ToolLabs) for 6
months.
So please make sure that you and your bots get a new password as soon as
possible! A well known bot in the wrong hands is dangerous, so change
the password now – don’t wait if you get a mail by the WMF (I got none,
but be affected AFAIS).
Sincerely,
DaB.

Hello all,
next
FRIDAY, 13. September 19:00-22:00 UTC
I will update our Linux-hosts with all non-critical updates that
happened since the last maintenance-window. This will include the
userland-hosts and the database-servers. Several downtimes may occur
during that window.
After the update I will prepare the upgrade from Debian Squeeeze
(oldstable) to Debian Wheezy (stable). The upgrade will surely break
some stuff, because several important packages will switch to a new
major release (for example perl from 5.10 to 5.14, php from 5.3 to 5.4).
I will send a further mail after Friday with details. The upgrade is
planed to happen 1 or 2 weeks later.
Sincerely,
DaB.
Hello,
the copy of the commons database in the s2 database cluster is broken - it is missing tables.
I have to get a copy of commons, drop the old commons copy and reinsert it.
I will drop and reinsert it starting on
Friday, 13th Sept 7 pm UTC
Cheers
Marlen/nosy
Hello,
next week there will be Solaris updates done by Alex Mette and me.
This means web servers, willow and submit/mail servers will be updated.
We will do this on Wednesday, 11th Sept 7-10 pm UTC.
Cheers
Marlen/nosy
