I'm sorry if it still a nightmare to you, but you should acknowledge that both users and developers are shifting to core, and that while it may be instable because of frequent updates, compat is actually unmaintained.
Of course you prefer to provide help in your 'native' framework, but please consider that every new user starting with compat is going to face the migration challenge soon after they're set up.

Core may be the future, but its a nightmare. I yet to get more than 5 minutes of usage before I run into a bug that causes a fatal error. When Trying to help new users I dont want to deal with the instability and problems core still has. Ricordisamoa, Im not going to change your option on this nor do I wish to debate it, since you are a relatively new developer to pywiki, but Ive been using it for 10 years and I know what works, and doesnt. Core isnt ready yet, but has a lot of promise when it is finally ready.

OK, First delete core. You dont need both.
Delete compat instead! Core is the future.

Then run:
generate_family_file.py http://localhost/mediawiki local
Follow that up with generate_user_files.py and then select local

If you have further needs please email me off list and I can walk you thru what you need.

Hi,

I've downloaded PyWikibot using the commands:
git clone --recursive https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/pywikibot/core.git
git clone --recursive https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/pywikibot/compat.git

I'm running a local Wiki (at http://localhost:127.0.0.1/mediawiki to be precise) on 64-bit Windows 7 and I haven't the foggiest of how to set up this program for it. I know I need to set up user_config.py for core and compat but as this Wiki isn't on the accepted Wiki families I am stuck.

I am a programming noob so if you could boil it down into simple things for me to do that'd be very helpful.

Thanks for your time,
Brenton
