Wikimedia Foundation is offering grants for technical projects until September 29th.  If you think you can build something crazy cool for Maps, now is the time. Less than one week left to apply, up to $30,000 for a person or a small team.

Maps project could help make https://maps.wikimedia.org better, and possibly even adapt the vector-serving Kartotherian to osm.org

Some ideas I wish can happen:
* Add hstore support to Mapnik's c++ code -- this will allow all languages to be stored in the vector tiles simultaneously.
* Help with the label clipping issues
* Improve/add SQL queries to generate needed data for vector tiles, and make vtiles smaller
* Integrate images from commons into maps
* Make panoramic views out of the images in commons
* Store 3D models and GeoJSON/TopoJSON in Commons.
* Some other crazy ideas that will make maps project and the whole OSM community even more awesome

Thanks!

To: Wikimedia developers <wikitech-l@lists.wikimedia.org>

Hi, the new round of Wikimedia Individual Engagement Grants
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG> is open until 29 Sep. For the
first time, technical projects are within scope, thanks to the feedback
received at Wikimania 2015, before, and after (T105414
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T105414>). If someone is interested in
obtaining funds to push this task, this might be a good way.
